Dr. Frenkel founded the East Florida Eye Institute in 1989 to bring state of the art diagnosis and treatment to the Treasure Coast, specializing in the most advanced treatments for Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma.
Dr. Frenkel is a Board Certified and fellowship trained ophthalmologist. He earned his medical degree from Wayne State University of Medicine where he was awarded numerous honors for his clinical work. Dr. Frenkel interned at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. While at Harvard he was made Clinical Fellow in Medicine. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at Kresge Eye Institute. Before founding East Florida Eye Institute, Dr. Frenkel returned to Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary to pursue advanced subspecialty fellowship training.
Dr. Frenkel is frequently sought for his expert opinion on the research studies of ophthalmologists nationwide.
Dr. Frenkel is a Voluntary Associate Professor of Ophthalmology,at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami, School of Medicine. He is the only Bascom Palmer staff member on the Treasure Coast. Dr. Frenkel is a Macular Degeneration investigator.

Marlon Demeritt , O.D.

Dr. Demeritt joined East Florida Eye Institute’s highly regarded treatment center in March 2010. As a board certified optometric physician educated at Nova Southeastern University and residency trained in Primary Care & Ocular Disease at Malcom Randall VA Medical Center & University of Florida Dept. of Ophthalmology, Dr. Demeritt is trained to evaluate and manage complex ocular diseases. He manages conditions such as Macular Degeneration, Retinal Disease, Early and Advanced Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Dry Eye Disease and Cataracts.
Dr. Demeritt ’s advanced training qualifies him to recognize when a patient is in need of Dr. Frenkel’s surgical expertise. Dr. Demeritt works as part of the surgical care team. Dr. Demeritt has trained under Dr. Frenkel and learned the most up-to-date diagnostic techniques and treatments for glaucoma, macular disease, severe dry eye and other ocular diseases.

Enhui Ko , O.D.
Board Certified Optometric Physician

Dr. Ko joined East Florida Eye Institute in February 2010. She graduated with high honors from Indiana University, and completed her externship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute where she obtained advanced training in glaucoma, retina, and post-operative care. Before relocating to South Florida, she practiced at Vision One in Daytona Beach, where she routinely managed ocular disease patients, co-managed cataract surgeries, and specialized in contact lens fittings.
Dr. Ko is board certified through the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. Her professional memberships include the American Optometric Association, Florida Optometric Association, Palm Beach County Optometric Association, and Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Society.

Shamim Haji, MD
|
Dr. Haji joined East Florida Eye Institute in 2008. He is an ophthalmologist educated at Mount Sinai Medical Hospital, New York.
Dr Haji is a clinical fellow studying the latest techniques in the management of Medical Retinal Diseases and Glaucoma under Dr Frenkel. He assists in East Florida Eye Institute's clinical trials and works closely with Dr Frenkel to gain expertise particularly in Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration.
Dr. Haji's compassionate care and approachable demeanor contribute to the personalized care East Florida Eye Institute's patients have come to expect. We are glad to have added him to our highly regarded ophthalmology team. |

Our Highly Specialized Staff
Technicians
East Florida Eye Institute boasts an extremely skilled technical staff, consisting of Certified Ophthalmic Technicians, Certified Ophthalmic Assistants and a Certified Orthoptist, with an average experience level of more than 15 years. Our technicians are among the few in the nation who have obtained certification by Duke University, DARC (The Digital Angiographic Reading Center), EMMES and others on individual ophthalmic instruments, such as OCT, digital fluorescein angiography, visual field analyzers and scanning laser ophthalmoscopes.
Our technicians have an excellent understanding of key test areas, such as fluorescein angiography, ultrasonography, muscle balance for double vision, and blood flow analysis. Together they make a great team and provide the best care to our patients. |

As part of our comprehensive care, we offer our patients the convenience of an on-site Optical Shop -- Discount Designer Optical. Our experienced, licensed Optician is NCLE accredited, ensuring our patients receive expert, medically accurate optical care. at the NW corner of the hospital grounds on the 3rd floor of the Surgi-Center building. In the 509 building, take the elevator to the 3rd floor. |

| From the North/South via I-95: |
- I-95 to EXIT 101 toward Stuart.
- Head EAST for 6 miles on SR-76, Kanner Highway to US 1.
- Cross Us 1 (Kanner Highway becomes Colorado Avenue after crossing US 1).
- Proceed to roundabout and take 1st RIGHT onto SE Ocean Blvd.
- Continue on SE Ocean Blvd for approx. 1/2 mile, turn LEFT onto Hospital Ave.

- FL Turnpike Exit 133.
- Pay toll and proceed straight onto Martin Downs Blvd. Go through 6 lights.

Follow the cross walk to the 509 Building entrance. |
